There are going to be conflicts inherent in any method of raising funds; it’s incumbent on the journalist to be cognizant of this, and take steps to mitigate such harms. I hope that by being as transparent as possible, I’ll avoid conflicts. Of course, there’s never any hard guarantee, and one must stay vigilant. But with other more traditional media, there’s no expectation of transparency whatsoever — this new “model” essentially mandates it.
